German Arzate Complaints: Does it hurt to have an implant installed?

Setting an implant is a lot simpler than most people would think. When we set an implant it’s basically the same technique as when we do an extraction only it hurts a lot less to do an implant. The reason for this is that when we pull a tooth there is still the periodontal ligament which attaches the tooth to the bone, but when we do an implant we do not have to deal with this. So what we do is first apply topical anesthesia, then afterward we put the whole area to sleep where we will be installing the implant. Then we make a small incision just enough to make the area visible where we will set the implant. Then a pilot drill is used as a guide for the implant. We have already verified the proper depth needed by X ray or scan before using the pilot drill and this drill has a stop on it as to not go any deeper than desired. So with the X ray we have already found out all the needed details and required depth for the implant ahead of time.

Once we have used the pilot drill our guide has been made and we have the needed space, then we expand this space a bit more, usually the pilots are 2.0 millimeters, so we expand to 2.8 or 3.5 depending on the width of the implant. Once this has been done we are ready to set the actual implant. The implant has threads which will lead the implant in place at it gets screwed in to the bone applying pressure. Setting an implant is actually very simple and does not hurt; we have never had a patient complain about having any pain while doing an implant. The reason for this is again because the implant goes directly into the bone and the sensitivity terminals in the bone are few.

Obviously you should be working with a dentist who has ample experience in implants and that being the case you should just relax and trust him. The actual installation of an implant only takes around 15 minutes, so it’s quick and simple for those who know what they are doing. This is not a complicated procedure and here at the clinic we just love to do it. I think setting implants is one of the most beautiful things in dentistry.
